Introduction

Guryongsa Temple, situated at the foot of the famous Chiaksan Mountain, is known to have been founded by Great Master Uisang in 668. The name Guryongsa means “nine dragons,” derived from the legend about the nine dragons that once lived in a pond here and then driven out when the pond was filled to build the temple over it. The temple site, surrounded by pine forests that adding elegance to the place, and most of its buildings including Bogwangru and Daeungjeon that have a long history have been designated as provincial cultural properties.
